It’s the beginning of summer when the kids are out of school and people are planning their summer vacations. Unfortunately, burglars are planning for your summer vacation too.
Burglars seek out homes where the family is on vacation and look for unlocked windows or doors, dimly lit entryways or locks in poor condition in order to enter your home and steal our valuables. Some burglars have been known to quickly snatch and grab a valuable item left in plain sight from the home while the family is barbecuing in the back yard!

KEEP YOUR HOME SECURE DURING SUMMER VACATION

  •  Don’t risk a burglar finding a spare key to your home that you have hidden underneath the flowerpot or elsewhere. Instead give a spare key to a trusted neighbor.

  • No matter how tempting it is to sleep with the window open, use a fan or the air conditioner instead. If you must sleep with the window open, place a bar or obstruction across the window opening to prevent intruders from climbing in through the window.

  •  Keep the garage door down and locked at night or anytime you plan to be away  from home.

  •  Don’t place valuable items in plain sight of windows, but rather secure them in a safe or a locked room. Keep your blinds or curtains drawn while away on vacation to prevent burglars from spotting any items of value in your home.

  • Use floodlights or LED spot or motion lights at night to deter criminals.

  • If you plan to be away on vacation, don’t announce your plans on social media sites like Facebook or Twitter. Choose a trusted neighbor to give your vacation plans to and ask them to keep an eye out for anything suspicious at your property. Call the police department and ask them to put your home on drive by surveillance list while you are away. You will also want to have the post office hold your mail while you are gone or have a neighbor pick it up for you while you are away. Also, let your newspaper carrier know to hold delivery until you return. A pile of mail or newspapers in the driveway is a dead giveaway that you are not home.

  • Make sure all of your locks are in proper working order. Call a local locksmith to come out and check your locks and fix or replace any that are not working properly.
