Older padlocks have a swinging shank and newer ones have a sliding shank, where the shank either swings or slides out of the body when it is unlocked. There are two different styles of Padlocks.
- Integrated padlocks use tumblers to unlock the shank. When the key is inserted into the lock and turned, the bolt enters the tumblers and unlocks the padlock.
- Modular padlocks use a pin or a wafer. When the key is inserted into the padlock, a plug inside the cylinder turns and releases the lock mechanism, thus opening the padlock.
Without a lock pick set, there isn’t really a way to open this type of lock. You would have to cut it off with a bolt cutter or grinder.

A combination lock is opened by dialing in a combination to unlock the shackle, which you then pull up on to unlock the lock.
If you've lost your key or forgotten the combination, you're going to have a difficult time getting in to a combination lock without knowing the code. There are, however, two methods you can try.
- Use the key. Some combination locks come equipped with a key to open the back if the lock is broken, allowing you to open the lock without having to put in the numbers. Not all combination locks come with keys, so this may not work. Sometimes, the broken part of the lock can prevent the key from opening the lock as well, making it equally ineffective.
- Use a screwdriver to snap off the head of the combination lock off to expose the inner lock mechanism. Then, you might be able to identify what the problem is and fix it. If that fails, you can see where the lock latches and might be able to snap that open with the screwdriver or a similar instrument.
Many people have storage units to store old, treasured items that won’t fit in your apartment, home or garage. When you rent the storage unit, you usually have to buy the lock and keys from the property manager. In most cases, the property manager does not keep a spare key to your storage unit. If you lose your key or lock yourself out of your storage unit, it is difficult to get the storage lock open, but you don’t need to panic.
Storage units can be found in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and most are secured with some kind of lock, such as a padlock, combination lock, disc lock or otherwise. If you've lost your key or forgotten the combination, you're going to have a difficult time getting in.
The easiest way to open the lock is to cut or break the lock, but that irreparably damages the lock and may damage the storage unit or locker door. A better solution would be to determine what type of lock you have and get a professional locksmith to pick the lock.

How to Remove a Storage Lock?
Disc Locks are the industry standard for professional storage units for rental. Because it has a closed shackle and hasp, it is a difficult, if not impossible lock to pick. A professional locksmith should be consulted.
Tip: Make sure the locksmith service only removes your lock in the presence of the property manager. They will likely need to contact the property manager to set up a time to visit your storage unit to perform the lock pick or cut.
